Lacquer art exhibition holds at cultural exchange center – Integrating Japanese and Vietnamese techniques

Trieu Khac Tien talks to visitors

The art exhibition, The Oriental Tale hosted by Trieu Khac Tien who is a lacquer artist and vice dean of the faculty of fine arts at the Vietnam University of Fine Art holds at The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, Vietnam) in Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi.

The exhibition has started on March 25. Trieu obtained a Master’s degree at the Vietnam University of Fine Art in 2007 and got Ph.D. degree in fine art (lacquer) at Tokyo University of the Arts. Currently, he is the representative lacquer artist in Vietnam. Ai Sugisaki, an assistant director of the center, evaluates Trieu’s work and says “While Trieu is a researcher of Japanese lacquer, he tries to utilize Vietnamese lacquer material and harmonize it with unique techniques, and combine them.”

At this exhibition, there are 65 lacquer paintings and 80 picture slides that are created since 2017 and his used equipment. All art pieces are displayed publicly for the first time.

Sugisaki explains “Japanese and Vietnamese lacquer techniques that have been developed for a long time are expressed beautifully in one art piece. We would like to introduce to general visitors Trieu’s art which is created by his passion and soul. ” She also adds “We hope visitors can feel the new charm of lacquer art through works that create the atmosphere of contemporary art. ”

Opening hour is 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Free admission. Opening days are until April 24.
